Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.
My favorite family tradition is celebrating Chinese New Year 🧧
My favorite part of celebrating this tradition is the gathering of families.
We give out red envelopes full of money to unmarried family members, especially children, for a year’s worth of luck and fortune.
I love watching the Lion Dance; the traditional Lion Dance always amazes me judging by how disciplined the lion acrobats are.
Even though it’s traditional to wear red for good luck on Chinese New Year, I’d always rebelled a little by wearing pink and purple instead (as long as the color is related to red) because red is my least favorite color; I find it too stereotypically overrated.
I love eating my favorite Chinese foods, such as seafood dumplings, spring rolls, and scallion pancakes.
I have many favorite traditions when celebrating Chinese New Year annually with my family…
Albeit there is this one tradition that I hated the most and that is cleaning before the day of Lunar Day.
It’s a necessity to clean before the big day and cleaning has been my biggest kryptonite due to the stress it causes me, though I acquiesced.
It’s very imperative to not clean on the exact day of Lunar Day; it is bad luck to do so because we’d be sweeping away all the good luck, so it’s been a Chinese omen for generations.
Another omen we have to watch out for is chopsticks sticking straight up on a bowl of rice because it means death.
Overall, despite the omens I’d have to be meticulous for during this tradition, I still find pleasure in being with my loved ones and receiving monied envelopes for luck and fortune.
I can never get tired of Lunar Day.
It will always be my favorite traditional day, as long as I’m ecstatic for the luck it will bring me.
新年快樂!願好運與你同 (Xīnnián kuàilè! Yuàn hǎoyùn yǔ nǐ tóng zài)
“Happy New Year! May the luck be with you.”
