More Books and Literacy in the Modern Society

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

What I would do to change the modern society is to provide more books and more literacy practices. That includes libraries and bookstores around the world.

I’m aware that now in this generation, people are addicted to technology, such as their phones and laptops. Unlike me, I always turn to books, both physical and electronic (Kindle eBook), as a way to distract myself whenever I’m not at work. Whenever I wait in waiting rooms during doctor appointments, I always bring a book or my Kindle with me, so that I could read while waiting until I hear my name being called. The reason why I always read while waiting in doctors’ offices is because I abhor using my phone as a waiting distraction; it’s a waste of battery life in my phone.

Phones are meant to be only for calling and texting. I never download any games in my phone since, as aforementioned, it’s a waste of battery life. The less I use my phone, the more energy I save from charging it. I recently recovered from my addiction to social media when I first realized that it affected my mental health, which means the more time I can get being involved in the real world, such as knitting, cooking, and, most importantly, reading books.

Due to the ongoing addiction for phones and social media, it made me realized that literacy is coming to an end, in which books are becoming extinct. Nowadays, people appear to not read anymore, which aggravates me a lot when there is a whole paged-world filled with knowledge and imaginative entertainment out there. That’s what I love about reading books; it brings me escapism from a certain type of reality that I do not want to stay in. When people don’t read books anymore, it made me realize that more people in this entire modern society is becoming illiterate, which is malignantly affecting the education system. People being unable to read books without a standpoint would be at risk for becoming a huge burden to this society, such as the lack of jobs and doable homelessness. We do not want any of that, which is why literacy is imperative for this society.

Not to mention that people would be lacking grammar skills and verbal articulation. I personally love it when people speak intellectually in conversations; now, people are using poor grammar, such as verbally using double negatives (which is a huge pet peeve for me as someone who happens to be a grammar nazi), and using word-fillers, such as “like,” “um,” and “literally,” all of which are the biggest nuisances in my perspective. Verbal articulation should be a major job requirement as of now. They should be fired or rejected at a professional workplace if they keep using provoking word-fillers and poor grammar. I personally think that this society should be more intellectually verbal in communications just by simply reading books every day.

In order for me to change this part of the modern society, what I would have done is to make literacy a mandatory requirement in every schools and as every day hobbies by law. I would use my money to build bookstores and libraries at every neighborhood there is. Barnes and Noble should be at every couple of blocks; I personally think it would be beneficial if Barnes and Noble is provided at every Starbucks there is. Coffee and books are the best fusion there is ever known. Reading books at coffeeshops would be the most euphoric and rewarding activity I’ve ever seen in person, as well as myself, hence the reason why people reading books while drinking coffee should be something more ubiquitous. I would also incorporate more libraries around the world, so that everyone would be accommodated if they cannot afford books.

I absolutely do not want to see any more people using their phones as distractions anymore. Instead, more people should be posting photos and videos of themselves reading books rather than posting selfies of themselves modeling naked. That would be my dream to perceive more bibliophiles out there. The more literacy I bring to this modern society, the more intelligent, sophisticated, and assiduous people would become in schools and workplaces.

I do not want any excuses for illiteracy or asininity. I want to make a law where everyone is required to read more books on a daily basis. Which is why it would be my dream to avert books from extinction and to provide more bookstores and libraries globally.

I do not want any more asinine, illiterate, social-media addicted people. I want more intelligent and sophisticated bibliophiles and more mandatory literacy in this modern society.
