Pride vs Humility: In Writing

Daily writing prompt
Are you a good judge of character?

I do consider myself as a good judge of character. Why? Because I am modest and humility is one of the greatest virtues ever in life.

My parents, whom I heavily honor as per Chinese tradition, have taught and disciplined me growing up. My mom may not even be a Tiger Mom, but she taught me a lot about life as an Asian American with lectures and disciplinary skills. That is why I always respect both my mother and father; they both brought me into this world, so the best thing I should do is honor them for life.

Out of all the lectures my parents taught me outside of school, there is this one certain lecture that will always remain within me. That lecture: “It’s best to remain humble and demure in life as you succeed. Being grandiose will never make you successful, so modesty is something you should always follow.”

I symbolically etched that quote from my parents into my heart, where it will forever be a reminder for myself for life. I can never forget this lecture. Ever.

Being modest and demure is what has been a part of me since day one of my writing career.

I know that nowadays, there are people out there who only care about their narcissism and grandiosity. I’ve seen Youtube videos of themselves trying their best to gain a million subscribers and followers in less than a day for their social media. They would perform attention-grabbing acts, in which it is something that I never approve of.

People nowadays would go beyond their heads to gain attention as part of their own success. Well, I am the opposite of that.

Since humility is part of my life and personality, I would never go that far into intentionally exploiting myself or perform risky actions just to gain attention on social media. I am not asinine to do such things. Unfortunately, this is something that young people still do today and that simply makes me more abhorrent towards the digital online world. There is no demureness within them. Just pure asininity.

I cannot sing, I am not a model, and I cannot act. All I am creatively good at is writing. There aren’t that much successful writers out there on the social media world, though I’d be sanguine enough to be part of that rarity. Without any intentional exploitation or anything else that is considered histrionic, I use my humility to help me succeed in the writing world.

I fought my way out there to become a successful author with nothing but hard work, dedication, and a shoestring budget. Although, the catch is that simultaneously, I am trying not to be famous. I honestly cannot handle the pressure of fame, henceforth, the reasoning behind myself being a private, reclusive author. I only did very little interviews and I truly do not want any type of publicity pertaining to myself being an achieving author. I do not want any of that. It is simply not me.

I do not even care about fame nor fortune.

Even though I have been making a modest amount of money from my published books and online articles and essays (meaning not a lot, just enough to put food on the table and pay my student loans and bills), I still do not care about making money from my writing, whether if it is a lot or very little. All I simply care about is sharing my writing out there, whereas I write about my personal experiences in life and have a wide enough audience who can correlate to me. That is all I care about pertaining to my writing career.

I don’t need fame nor fortune in order to become a successful novelist and author.

I don’t need to be a famous bestselling author to get here.

I don’t even need to be rich in order to succeed as an author.

All I want and need is to share my writing out there. That is simply enough for me.

With all the demureness I have within me, I don’t need to go that far to become successful and famous. I don’t even want to become famous. I want to remain reclusive and live a simple private life as an ordinary person.

Which is why I choose humility as the main virtue in my writing, never pride. I will remain modest, as per request from my honorable parents. There is truly nothing to be grandiose about as an author.

Henceforth, I perceive my humility and integrity as a good judge of character. I personally think that other people should perceive this as well.
