My Hardest Sacrifice

The hardest decision I’ve ever had to make was giving up pre-med. Growing up, I’ve always wanted to become a doctor, mainly a dermatologist, so that I could impress my parents and the rest of my entire family. I fought tooth and nail to get good grades to go to medical school. I didn’t get straight As, though my grades were good enough to attend the most prestigious private college in Brooklyn, New York, St. Francis College.

When I first walked into that school, I was so excited about the medical and science academics. My first assigned pre-med course was Anatomy and Physiology. I was elated at first—until this came along.

Unfortunately, I failed the course after taking exams for it. It was convoluted than I thought. Fearing for the worst, I suffered through severe stress and anxiety about getting Fs on that course, and my evanescent dream of becoming a doctor was going downhill. The last thing I wanted was to be suspended for academic probation, which would negatively affect my intellect reputation.

By the end of that first year of pre-med, my chances were slim and I’m not good enough to become a doctor. When I went to have lunch with my parents, I spoke to them about the fact that I don’t want to be a doctor anymore after failing Anatomy and Physiology. After being honest with my parents with all the veracity I had…

They told me that they didn’t care about whether or not I am one, and what really matters to them is me being happy with what I truly wanted to do and what I wanted to become. I didn’t expect this, coming from an Asian family; I anticipated that they would be strictly forthright with my successful future, though that didn’t happen. With more integrity, I told them that I wanted to become a writer… and they accepted my true passion for writing.

Feeling relieved with all of this veracity, that was when I’ve made my hardest decision, and not to mention, a sacrifice.

I dropped out of pre-med and then I changed my major to English and a minor in philosophy.

I never regretted it since then because I have found my calling passion for writing. Ever since I changed my major, I felt elated about doing what I love the most without so much worry.

Now, here I am, an independent published author, pursuing my dreams of becoming the writer I am today with all the books I self-published and sharing my personal perspectives and imaginations to the entire world.

Despite making this hard decision and sacrifice, I still have no regrets about making my own choices.

All that matters is how happy I am with becoming the person I am today with a career that I am truly passionate about.
